Top seed Rafael Nadal joined fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the second round in Stockholm, as he came through his first test unscathed, beating Dutchman Raemon Sluiter 6-4, 6-2.
The victory, which took the Spaniard over 91 minutes, was the third since losing to Mikhail Youhzny in the US Open quarter-final last month. The other two victories came in Spain's Davis Cup match against Italy recently. Nadal now faces Joachim Johansson, who returned from his long injury lay-off with a two-set win over Italy's Davide Sanguinetti. It was Johansson's first ATP event victory since beating Greg Rusedski at Wimbledon last year. The 24-year-old served 11 aces on his passage to the second round.
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez won his first ATP-level match since the US Open at the expense of Juan Monaco’s retirement early in the first set. Monaco, who reached the semifinals at Costa do Sauipe and Stuttgart this season, pulled out of the match when trailing 1-2 with a right knee injury.
Lopez, now 17-26 in the season, reached the final at Gstaad (l. Gasquet) and quarterfinals in Nottingham (l. Bjorkman), and now faces another Spaniard David Ferrer, who defeated Italian Andreas Seppi.
Belgium's Kristof Vliegen defeated Nicolas Massu 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 20 minutes to move into the second round. Vliegen, 24, improved to 28-20 in the season. Those 28 wins are more than he amassed in his entire ATP career prior to 2006. He reached the second final of his ATP career at Munich in May (l. to O. Rochus). He also has reached three semifinals and one quarterfinal.
Home favorite Jonas Bjorkman progressed to the second round of his home nation tournament with a two-set victory over the dutchman Peter Wessels. Bjorkman, a surprise Wimbledon semi-finalist this year, took 75 minutes to secure a 7-5, 6-2 win. It improved the veteran Swede's 2006 singles record to 13-16. The win lines Bjorkman up with an all-Swedish affair in the second round against eighth seed Robin Soderling.
Swedish Wild card Andreas Vinciguerra overcame French qualifier Nicolas Devilder 6-4, 6-1 in 81 minutes. It was the 25-year-old's first win on the ATP circuit this year. He now faces a stern test against third seed Tomas Berdych in the next round.
Frenchman Marc Gicquel dismissed Brit Jonathan Marray in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-6(3). Marray, who has been on useful doubles form recently with his brother, Andy, only won 46 % of points on his second serve in the 83-minute loss. Gicquel, aged 29, now anticipates a second round encounter with either fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen, or French qualifier Michael Llodra.

HE'S BACK! Joachim Johansson beat Rafael Nadal 6-4 7-6, hitting 17 aces. This is his first ATP tournament since February. He had such a good start to 2005 that took him to the top 10. I hope he can get back to where he was because he is such a powerful player.
Joachim Johansson is quite talented... it's nice seeing him return to the circuit in that fashion. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Top seed James Blake fought past No. 6 seed Olivier Rochus (pictured) of Belgium for a place in the If Stockholm Open semifinals on Friday.
The American hit 16 aces for a 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 win in two hours to extend his career lead over Rochus to 3-1.
Blake, No. 6 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, can add 14 points to his tally if he defends his title and further his chances of qualifying for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai next month.
Blake, who has won four ATP titles in Sydney (d. Andreev), Las Vegas (d. Hewitt), Indianapolis (d. Roddick) and Bangkok (d. Ljubicic) this year, will play No. 8 seed Robin Soderling. (Head-to-Head)
Soderling knocked out No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-3 in 56 minutes. Soderling, who also won their ATP Masters Series Cincinnati match in August, now holds a 31-19 record for the season with one runner-up finish in Memphis (l. to Haas).
Fifth seed and 2001 runner-up Jarkko Nieminen won his second career meeting over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 in 71 minutes to reach the Stockholm Open semifinals on Friday.
As a result of reaching his fifth ATP semifinal of the season, Nieminen added five points to his INDESIT ATP 2006 Race total but remains No. 17 with 255 points. The Finn, who captured his maiden ATP title in Auckland at the start of the year, now holds a 51-23 match record.
Nieminen will next meet Sweden’s Joachim Johansson, who is playing his first ATP-level tournament since San Jose in February following right shoulder and elbow injuries.
Johansson edged past seventh-seeded Belgian Kristof Vliegen 6-7(5), 7-5(5), 7-6(7) in two hours and 54 minutes to reach the semifinals in Stockholm for the first time. Vliegen served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and held three match points with Johansson serving at 5-6, 0-40, in the third set. Both players hit 24 aces and broke one another once. _________________

I'm pretty sure they weren't thinking of health when they gave him that nickname. Funny how comparisons in this World can be so contradictory.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

it doesn't have it's own thread, and there isn't any point in starting one for one match, so I will post it here. 17 year old Vania King is in her first WTA final after straight setting Shaugnessy. She will play a Thai player who's name I can neither pronounce nor spell, and I have no desire to go look it up again. _________________
