Tournament Thread: Sydney International, Tier I

Hobart International saw the emergence of Serena Williams on the tour. She destroyed all opponents in her path, including world number 2 Ana Ivanovic, to take the title remarkably comfortably. The Final was a great battle with fellow-American Lindsay Davenport who got her season underway. Will we see a new player emerge this week at our first Tier I or will it be the same faces? Will Steffi get back to winning ways? All to be revealed here at Sydney!

Tournament Draw:

(1) Steffi Graf vs BYE

Venus Williams vs (6) Svetlana Kuznetsova

(7) Amelie Mauresmo vs Justine Henin

Elena Dementieva vs (3) Martina Hingis

*********************************************

Maria Kirilenko vs (4) Lindsay Davenport

(5) Serena Williams vs Ai Sugiyama

Martina Navratilova vs (8 ) Kim Cljisters

(2) Ana Ivanovic vs BYE

Rebound Ace points are due in on Friday 10.P.M GMT

Send points to me (Not_Even_Amateur) via PM

Good luck!

Lindsay Davenport = 120 points for sets 1 and 3

I am dissapointed with certain people not sending points even though this is a Tier I!!

I hope you ALL send points for the Australian Open.

No Annabel's preview for this tournament because of this dissapointing news. Thankyou those who did send points (you know who you are Wink ).

Round of 16 and 32 might be today, they might be tomorrow.

Sydney Round of 16: Venus Williams vs (6) Svetlana Kuznetsova

Venus Williams dfts (6) Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 7-6(3)

Solid performance from Venus - she didn't cower to Sveta's power and she held her serve brilliantly. She had a lot more left at the end of sets and could be one to watch this week.

Sydney Round of 16: (7) Amelie Mauresmo vs Justine Henin

Justine Henin dfts (7) Amelie Mauresmo 5-7 6-4 6-4

Woo! Well done Justine! She gets her first win on tour and it is against a high quality player in 7th seed Mauresmo. She played a smart game and had just enough left to kill off Mauresmo in the second and third sets. Good match.

Sydney Round of 16: Elena Dementieva vs (3) Martina Hingis

Elena Dementieva dfts (3) Martina Hingis 7-6 (4) 7-5

Wow. For the first time Martina does not reach the Semi-Final of a tournament. She choked, basically. She struggled to combat Elena's fantastic fighting spirit and the Russian just had much more left at the end of sets!

Sydney Round of 16: Maria Kirilenko vs (4) Lindsay Davenport

(4) Lindsay Davenport dfts Maria Kirilenko 6-4 7-6(5)

Very tight match this. Lindsay played exactly the way she did at Hobart and Maria seemed more prepared. But Davenport's extra firepower just scraped her through in straight sets. Maria was unlucky here and could be a threat at the first Grand Slam of the year; she just needs that one win.

Sydney Round of 16: (5) Serena Williams vs Ai Sugiyama

(5) Serena Williams dfts Ai Sugiyama 6-4 7-6(4)

Solid performance from last week's champion. You never get a really easy match against Sugiyama, or very rarely, so the American did extremely well to get by here without dropping a set. She served well and won the games she wanted. Good performance.

Sydney Round of 16: Martina Navratilova vs (8 ) Kim Cljisters

(8 ) Kim Cljisters dfts Martina Navratilova 6-1 7-6(9)

Kim plays a really good first set and destroys Martina with some aggressive groundstrokes. In the second set though it was really tight and Kim scraped through. She was more prepared to go for it though and that is what
got her the victory. Martina has to be more aggressive for the Australian Open or she is going to struggle.

That's actually scary... I put 14-15-15-15-17-0-16 into my first seven games in the first set, and I love 6-1. Embarassed Confused

Yea, that happens. I remember Alex told me that on one of the games on WTAworld he had a ton of the points near 20 and he still lost the set 6-0.

Oh, ok. It's just a bit scary because, apparently, I have to be even more aggressive. I mean, I didn't have any more points to spend after those seven games I played in the first set! Shocked

You should be able to figure it out x.doublea; you don't have to be aggressive in all those games; you can take some out of some and add them in others...so in 2 games at least you have 18+! That way you don't get destroyed by someone who has 18s/19s/20s instead of your 17s and 14s. You were consistently aggressive; but never aggressive enough. Beside your points just matched up badly. Work hard for the Aussie and you never know...

hahaha!!! on the 6th game I only had 1 point AND STILL WON THE GAME! Laughing

My plan was to win 6-2 and I would have done so as I had 18 points in the 7th and 8th games. I got lucky and won 6-1.
Here are some of my points: ?-?-?-?-?-1-18-18-?-?-?-?

I am now 4-0 in second sets. Xdoublea I can say that this was my closest 2nd set ever!

Btw, I can confirm that NEA is accurate! Smile
