This is the last ATP tournament of the year before the Masters Cup. For the first time since 2003 it has a very good draw, and will determine who takes the remaining places for Shanghai.

Roger Federer is the top seed, and is probably in his best form all year. His best results at this tournament though are just two QF's. He could have an early test against Thomas Johansson, who is in the final of St.Petrsburg this week. There is a good match set up for the 3rd round between in-form Novak Djokovic and Tommy Robredo, who is 8th in the race and needs a good performance here. The winner will likely play Federer. Nikolay Davydenko, Mario Ancic and Fernando Gonzalez all have chances to qualify for Shanghai aswell and are in the same quarter.

The other half of the draw has defending champion Tomas Berdych due to meet David Ferrer, and Andy Murray to play another Shanghai contender David Nalbandian. James Blake also needs a good run here to qualify, but indoor specialist Dominik Hrbaty or Tommy Haas could stop him. 2nd seed Rafael Nadal has a tough draw. He could face 3-time champion Marat Safin in round 2, and then Richard Gasquet (who is in the Lyon final) in the 3rd round. Apart from Berdych and Safin, the only other former champion in the draw is Sebastian Grosjean.

I think Federer will win this title. Nadal could have alot of trouble getting through, and there isn't really anyone else that can stop him.

I think Federer will try to conserve energy for YEC rather than play his absloute best. He's already qulaified and is shown everyone that he is playing the best this year. I say Gasquet will take this title. Blake will be a big factor, He's been playing pretty well also. But I think everyone's eyes will be on the defending champ Berdych. This guy has a monster game and indoors you'd better watch out.

Nadal has an absolutely terrible draw. Safin in the second round, Gasquet in the next, Blake in the following, Berdych in the next.

...granted he makes it past the second
well, i too want gasquet to take this one, but a shaky nadal might have a rather large impact on Gasquet's draw. I don't think Nadal will make it past Safin or Clement, which Gasquet beat in Lyon, those two have been playing out of their minds

Federer is all about building his legacy. He has not win in Paris yet. He is in his best form. So he will win this one to tie Agassi in winning 7 different Masters events. In addition, he is still adding to his all-time record for the most points ever accumulated in the ATC race.

I think it is far better to get semi or final point picking someone who isn't a sure winner. it's actually a challenge.

That's why having the women's tournaments are so interesting opposed to the mens tournaments with Federer in them.

True, PSALT, but if you don't pick Federer, you're basically missing out on some vital points. Yes, picking another person who does well feels better, but and the end of the day, you don't get the same amount of reward.

I still think Federer will play this event. He does actually care about the history of the game and wants to get the best possible achievements. Like Tennis Fan said, he will make another big achievemeny by winning in Paris by having won shields at 7 places in the world. He has only played Paris 4 times in his career, and not since 2003. He has a mild record there aswell. I'm sorry, but I don't see anyone beating him this year in the form he is in.

Nadal out of Paris:

Nadal joins Paris Masters casualty list

PARIS, Oct 29 (Reuters) - World number two Rafael Nadal became the latest of a series of high-profile players to pull out of the Paris Masters Series tournament starting on Monday.

The Spaniard told organisers on Sunday he had a rib injury. He joins world number four Ivan Ljubicic, U.S. Open runner-up Andy Roddick and Argentine David Nalbandian, who all withdrew over the past few days, citing injuries or illness.

Nadal described his injury as not serious and he should be back in action for the season-ending Masters Cup, which will feature the top eight players in the ATP race from Nov. 12 to 19 in Shanghai.

The 20-year-old Nadal, who has triumphed at the last two French Opens, has never entered the main draw at the Paris Masters, losing in qualifying in his only previous appearance as a 17-year-old in 2003.

The favourite in Paris will be Roger Federer, who underlined his brilliant form by winning the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel on Sunday.

The world number one last visited the high-tech Bercy hall in 2003. His best results there are two quarter-final appearances that year and in the previous edition.

This is a shame. Nadal has been in poor form recently, he said it was because he was tired. I really hope he doesn't pull out of the Masters Cup for the 2nd year in a row.

This is not good for Paris or Shanghai. Let's hope it doesn't get too serious. Perhaps he shouldn't have played in Madrid.
