Guillermo Canas cruised into the second round of the Pacific Life Open Saturday with a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win over Czech Jan Hajek. But things are going to get a lot tougher very quickly for Canas, who next faces three-time defending champion and World No. 1 Roger Federer.

Canas came into the main draw as a lucky loser, as he was the highest-ranked player to lose in the last round of qualifying. Asked if he felt lucky to be drawn so close to Federer, Canas said: "Yeah, it's lucky for many things. First thing, I am still in the tournament; this is good. The second thing, I'm playing with one of the most important players in history. I think it's good. I gonna try to enjoy this. I gonna try to play my best tennis. Maybe I have a small chance to win. But I'm very confident in my game. It's great to meet with these kind of players for me."

Canas defeated Federer in 2002 en route to his most important title - ATP Masters Series Canada. The Argentine returned to the ATP circuit in September 2006 after a 15-month doping suspension and during the recent Latin America clay court swing Canas won his seventh career title in Costa do Sauipe. Canas reached the 2005 Pacific Life Open semifinals in his last appearance in the desert. In that match he lost to Federer in straight sets.

Tim Henman (pictured) served for the match at 5-4 in the third set but eventually lost to Czech Jan Hernych 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Henman, playing just his second tournament (Las Vegas) since a fourth-month hiatus due to a knee injury, was an Indian Wells finalist in 2004. Henman said his lack of match practice was a factor in the loss.

"It's erratic. Getting off to the start, I think it sort of set the tone for the lack of rhythm on my serve. When I did start to serve a little bit better in the second set, early part of the third set, then I felt like I can be the one dictating play.
But when my serving was that erratic, when I stopped missing first serves, then he's able to get into more and more games, more and more baseline rallies, and life becomes more difficult.

"In all honesty, it is a reflection of a lack of match play. It's something that I've got to be a little bit patient with and keep working hard towards."

Hernych last week snapped a four-match losing streak to reach the Las Vegas quarterfinals. He is now 4-7 on the year.

wow...I only watched a few games of the first set and it looked like Federer was in control...a little rusty but firmly in control....then again Marty Fish looked to be in control of his match as well.

So it goes...

Still it is great to have another big tourney on T.V.!....I always go through withdrawls after the Aussie Open....after this and Key Biscane....the Clay court season is just around the corner...Thank God for the Tennis Channel!

Canas was quite amazing as the match went on. He wasn't giving Federer any free points. Every single point Federer won he had to work for. He started to get quite frustrated. Canas was hitting the ball so deep, and with such precision. It was something to see Federer truly being bothered by an opponent who's name is not Rafael.

YAYAYAYAYAYAY! I am soo pleased.....not just because I don't like Roger but because Guillermo was one of my faves before the drug thingy! What an amazing win, this has to be one of the best comebacks to the ATP tour in a while.....winning a number of challengers, an ATP title and now snapping Federer's 41 match-winning streak!

OMG! This is fantastic! Laughing

Canas isn't my favourite, but huge hats off to him for beating Federer in that fashion. But, as leftys said, there goes all our Fantasy points this week! Laughing

Even in the women's event, the picks were rather boring, all of us except Tennis fan and PSALT picked Sharapova to win! Laughing

Was the forum down for the last couple of days??

Anyhow, what a surprise! Canas is far from my favorite player. In fact, I think he should have been banned for life....

Albeit, it is great to see Federer out so early. Time for the ATP to become interesting again... hopefully.

It would have been nice to see another one of the your guns beat Federer like Murray did last year instead of Canas, but I will take a Federer loss any day.

This may revitalize Nadal!

Wow, that's really surprising, in my opinion. Chela is quite talented, but still. Did Nadal hit many shots which landed perfectly within the height of Chela's torso?
