Marcos Daniel posted the biggest upset of the day in Poertschach as the Brazilian defeated No.2 seed Lleyton Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the first round of the Hypo Group Tennis International on Monday.

Juan Ignacio Chela, the No.5 seed, broke a three-match losing streak by defeating Yeu-Tzuoo Wang 6-3, 6-1. The Argentine will next meet Jiri Novak, who notched his 325th career win by dismissing Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-3.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet - who came into the tournament as a lucky loser after falling in the final round of qualifying - upset No.3 seed Dominik Hrbaty 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. My question is why did gasquet have to qualify???

Also advancing were Potito Starace and Nicolas Almagro. The Italian Starace defeated Alberto Martin 7-5, 7-6(5), while Almagro downed Christophe Rochus 6-3, 6-4.

yes, Gasquet has been playing horribly lately. his ranking has plummeted. I think he is now either third or fourth (not sure what Santoro's ranking is) ranked Frenhman.

I still don't know why he played qualifying, and even worse, he lost in the final round. He is still in the top 50 so there is no way he should have to qualify for a tournament.

43 is awfully high to qualify. maybe he was late to enter?

I think we was late to enter. Simon & Horna are ranked lower than him but seeded in the main draw...

He may have been late to enter, but usually a tournament gives wild cards to the higher players if they are late to enter. Maybe Gasquet wanted to get some extra matches ahead of the French Open as his season so far has been poor...

Azzaro is an old pro, but mainly on the lower circuits. Gasquet should not have lost that match.

Yes, that's what I think he did...sort of like what Roddick wanted to do at Delray Beach.

Top seed Nikolay Davydenko cruised past Tomas Zib 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Hypo Group Tennis International in Poertschach on Tuesday. The Russian, who reached the final in Estoril and quarterfinals in Hamburg, improved to 27-14 on the season (10-6 on clay).

Davydenko, currently No.6 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, will next battle qualifier Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo who defeated Nicolas Lapentti 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

For a spot in the quarterfinals Simon will face wild card Oliver Marach. The Austrian overcame Vince Spadea 6-4, 6-3 to post his second clay court win of the season.
