Serbian rising star Novak Djokovic, playing in his first ATP event since a third round appearance at the US Open, defeated local favorite Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 6-3 in 65 minutes to move into the second round of the Open de Moselle in Metz.
Djokovic, currently No.20 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, is 156 points behind No.8 David Nalbandian but still in the hunt for a berth in the Tennis Masters Cup.
Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu notched his 100th career win after outlasting countryman Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes.

Second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero crashed out in the first round of an ATP event for the second time in as many weeks as the No.4 Spaniard lost to local Julien Benneteau 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7) in two hours and 12 minutes.
Ferrero, currenly No.19 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, is 155 points behind No.8 David Nalbandian.
American Mardy Fish also advanced to the second round by dismissing qualifier Thierry Ascione 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 44 minutes. Fish, the winner at Houston (d. Melzer), improved to 19-14 in the season and will next face No.7 seed Fernando Verdasco or Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo.

Good Luck in Miami Makiri
Not a great year for Dominik Hrbaty. Also not a bad day for the French other than Mahut. And it seems since JCF had that great run at Cincy he hasn't done much at all since.
04.10.06 Singles: 1st Rd: Marat plays Misha Youzhny(RUS) on Centre Court not before 7pm CET (6pm BST). Go Marat. I'm hoping for a good match. Both are coming off good wins in Davis cup where they both defeated top Americans, James Blake, and Andy Roddick. Should be very intresting. _________________

Yes, not a great year for Hrbaty. Hasn't done much at the Slams or at the normal level... perhaps his 'lucky' shirt isn't doing it for him. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
But I'm still pondering on JCF. Comes off a good run it cincy and then blows at the Open and then here. Talk about confidence shatering. _________________

"Misha" was a typo, right? I really hope Misha is not his new pet name, Lena D is nothing compared to that one..... _________________
No it wasn't. I don't mistype russian names (I never write anything relating to russian like names). I got the first sentence from Marat's offical website. Hence "Misha" _________________
With Safin, it sort of depends how he feels. If he feels good, he's definitely one of the best. Sort of like you in Fantasy Tennis, J-Man. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

Melzer Posts 10th Consecutive Win, Reaches Metz Final
Austria's No.1 Jurgen Melzer posted his 10th consecutive win to book a spot in the final of the Open de Moselle in Metz.
Melzer needed one hour and 24 minutes to dismiss French wild card Macq Gicquel 7-6(3), 6-3 and notch his 110th career win.
The 25-year-old is on quite a roll, winning the first tournament of his seven-year ATP career three weeks ago in Bucharest (d. Volandri). He is riding a 10-match winning streak. After a dismal 1-8 start to the year, Melzer has gone 30-15 for an overall record of 31-23.
For the title, Melzer will take on the winner of No.3 seed Novak Djokovic (pictured) and Sebastien Grosjean.
Djokovic, 19, is playing in his fourth semifinal this year and the fourth of his young ATP career. He won his first title at Amersfoort in July (d. Massu) and was runner-up at Umag a week later (l. to Wawrinka). He lost in the semis at Zagreb in February (l. to Ljubicic). He has won 16 of his last 20 matches after starting the year 16-11.
Djokovic has won more matches this year (32) than anyone else on the ATP circuit who is still a teenager.
Grosjean, 28, is playing in his second semifinal of the year. He also made it that far at Marseille in February (l. to Ancic). He hasn’t won more than two matches in a tournament since then until this week.
Grosjean is trying to make it to his first final since April 2005 in Houston (l. to Roddick). He has reached 12 finals in his career and won three titles, the last coming at St. Petersburg four years ago (d. Youzhny). He is playing here for the first time too.
