Wimbledon joins the other Grand Slams by offering equal prize money for women and men. I remember we had quite a long debate here about that last year. I personally think it is right to have the prize money equal.

Bad decision...caved under 21st Century pressure...I thought SW19 was more individual but whatever...

It's about time. Being traditional is one thing, but not awarding women equal prize money was simply backward thinking!

John Mcenroe and Mardy Fish are two people to back this so far. Fish says that while men play longer matches, tennis is about entertainment, not how many hours you play. Tommy Haas has critisced it, saying it is 'unfair' since men play longer matches.

Men play longer matches on grass?...this argument holds more water if we were talking about Roland Garros, but most men's matches at Wimbledon are over in the blink of an eye...the serve has become too overpowering on grass....rallies on grass (for men's matches) have only recently made a comeback...(I'm talking since the last wood racquet was use in '86 until 2000/2001)....that argument is a farce.

anyway Tommy Haas is saying it....pardon me, but who cares what his opinion is?...a healthy Steffi Graf would murder him on Centre Court.

The French Open are now reviewing their prize money. Currently, they award the champions the same amount, but the other players do not have equal prize money (Finalists, Semi-Finalists etc. ).

Wimbledon didn't want a bad rap. They had lot's of pressure on them to do it.

This one pisses me off much more.

The thing is, the winners really don't need the equal prize money, but the young girls struggling to keep their careers alive that lose early get less than the men, and every dollar for them counts. Unlike the champion, where the extra few thousand dollars really makes no difference.

They seriously better change their prize money situation.

You know, stevos, I never thought about it that way, but your comment is the most justified and logical of them all.

I agree. I also had never thought about it like that before. Equal prize money throughout the tournament's early rounds is much more important than money in the finals. Great point.

They could also achieve equity if airline tickets and hotel rooms are cheaper for females! Wink
