update

Sixth seed Jurgen Melzer continued his mid-season resurgence with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez to reach the second round in Casablanca Monday. He could make a nice run here.

Frenchman Arnaud Clement, one of just three ATP title winners (Nicolas Massu, Luis Horna) in this week's field, saved three of four break points in his 6-4, 6-1 win over Argentine Juan Monaco. Fifth-seed Clement is chasing his second title of the year, having won Marseille in February.

German Bjorn Phau improved to 9-8 on the year with a 7-6(4), 6-1 upset victory over fourth-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi, winning the last five games of the match. Phau served three aces and saved six of seven break points faced.

It's nice Melzer's continuing his good form. Maybe he will be able to threaten at Roland Garros if he's able to play like the way he's been playing consistantly.

Yes, and Melzer hasn't proven he can play consistantly. It's a pity, because he can hit with anyone when he's at his best.

Yes. He has an extremely explosive jumping backhand drive and drop shot though....when he's on. His shots have no 'solidity' at all.

I would say he's way more consistant than Melzer. I'm not sure he's as good at his best, but he's mentally tougher and has been to a Grand Slam final before. He's a threat to anyone, and he has already won a title this year.

Yes, but Clemente's an accomplished player nevertheless. Melzer appears to be building more stability recently, so he's a favourite. We never know about him, though....

comfidence can do alot. clement proabably feels alittle un-tested on clay even though he won his match. unlike melzer who feels right at home when he walks on to the court

Yes. Melzer has already got to a final (was it Houston?) on clay, so he'll feel just great on the clay. I think Clement is more of a hard court player, so the clay might be a slight challenge for him.
