Discuss the Ba-Ca Tennis Trophy here...
Reigning Tennis Masters Cup champion David Nalbandian improved his INDESIT ATP 2006 Race total by five points following his first round victory over Argentine compatriot Juan Ignacio Chela (pictured) at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy on Tuesday.
Nalbandian now holds 375 points, just 20 points behind No. 7-ranked Tommy Robredo, in the race to secure one of six remaining berths for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai next month.
Second-seeded Nalbandian beat Chela 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2 for a third victory in five meetings in two hours and four minutes. Nalbandian broke the Chela serve five times, hitting four aces and three double faults.
Nalbandian, the winner of one ATP title in Estoril (d. Davydenko) this year, improves his ATP match record to 35-13. The 24-year-old will meet Austrian Olivier Marach in the second round.
Meanwhile top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic started the defense of his Vienna title with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Agustin Calleri, for five out of five career wins against the Argentine. Ljubicic hit eight aces and won 32 of 36 points on first serve.
Ljubicic, currently No. 3 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race just two points ahead of No. 4 Andy Roddick, will add to his points total if he reaches the quarterfinals this week. The Croat plays Florian Mayer of Germany in the second round.
Another Tennis Masters Cup contender, Marcos Baghdatis, improved his chances of reaching Shanghai with a tight three-set win over Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo. The 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory took the Greek-Cypriot 142 minutes, during which he saved 73 % of th break points he faced.
Baghdatis's win extended his 2006 record to 37-17. He will now play Austrian Wild card Stefan Koubek, who defeated Denis Gremelmayr of Germany 6-1, 6-0. Baghdatis currently nestles in ninth place in the INDESIT ATP Race, one place off a slot for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.
In the battle of the Spaniards, Carlos Moya progressed against Nicolas Almagro with a tight three-set win. Despite winning only 14 % of his break point opportunities, the elder Spaniard managed to come through 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). Moya now faces an equally difficult match against fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez, who beat Gilles Simon in the first round.
Another player featuring in the Race to Shanghai at No. 11 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, 2001 champion, Tommy Haas of Germany, enjoyed a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Martin Fischer of Austria.
Sixth-seeded Haas, playing his first ATP tournament since reaching the US Open quarterfinals (l. to Davydenko) last month, broke the Fischer serve four times and improved his ATP-level match record to 44-17 for the season with victory in one hour and 25 minutes. _________________ A fan of "that French backhand dude"

It's a tight race. If you look at Robredo and Blake. Blake is leading by one point
Yes it is getting really close. Unfortunately for Baghdatis, he is injured so I don't think he'll qualify. I am excited to see what happens at Madrid and even Paris. For once they will mean something instead of having crap draws with the likes of Berdych winning it. Nalbandian hasen't been hi best recently and Baghdatis is probably out of it so Ancic just needs a good run in Madrid to get to number 8. This is a real opportunity for him.
Ancic has a huge chance, especially since Baghdatis is injured at the worst possible time, and since Nalbandian has been dormant for the longest time. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Defending champion Ivan Ljubicic added four points to his INDESIT ATP 2006 Race total following a 6-3, 6-3 second round victory over Florian Mayer of Germany in 68 minutes at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Ljubicic, currently No. 3 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with 440 points, hit 14 aces and won 30 of 32 first serve points with three breaks of serve.
The Croat will next meet either Stanislas Wawrinka or No. 8 seed Novak Djokovic, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Czech lucky loser Tomas Zib, in the quarterfinals.
Andy Roddick, currently fourth in the INDESIT ATP Race, came through his first round match with Argentine Jose Acasuso. Roddick cruised through the first set 6-0 before winning the second 7-6(2). The win took the top-ranked American little over an hour.
Roddick, who already has the Cincinnati Masters title to his name this year, is looking to solidify his place in Shanghai with a successful run in Vienna. The 24-year-old faces young Frenchman, Richard Gasquet in the next round.
Gasquet secured his meeting with Roddick following a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Columbian qualifier Alejandro Falla. Despite winning only 30 percent of points on his second serve, the 20-year-old came through in 108 minutes.
Fernando Gonzalez, who will still be hoping to press a claim for a slot at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai next month, progressed to the second round. The Chilean dismissed Spaniard Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-4 in under an hour.
The victory improved the Chilean's 2006 to 40-18, a record he will be hoping to improve when he faces the winner of second seed David Nalbandian and Oliver Marach's match.
The No.7 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero failed to advance beyond the first stage, losing a tight three-set battle to Austrian Jurgen Melzer. After losing the first set 7-5, Melzer came stronger winning the next two 7-6(5), 6-3. Melzer faces Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot next.
Tommy Haas saw his chances of qualifying for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai severely dented. The sixth-seeded German lost his second round clash against Dominik Hrbaty of the Slovak Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in 88 minutes. Hrbaty won 40 of 47 points on first serve and hit 12 aces during his fifth victory in 12 career meetings against Haas.
Haas, the winner of three ATP titles in Delray Beach (d. Malisse), Memphis (d. Soderling) and Los Angeles (d. Tursunov) this year, is ranked No. 11 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with a 44-18 match record.
Hrbaty, with a 25-24 match record, will next meet either No. 4 seed Marcos Baghdatis or Stefan Koubek in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Gonzalez can play really well, so I'm not too surprised that Roddick lost.... surely he'll be a factor in Madrid. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Ljubicic thrashed Hrbaty 6-1 6-4. He has not faced a break point at all in any of his last 9 matches in Vienna, since winning the title last year. That is perfect serving!
