Hate to say it, but I don't really see anyone beating Federer here.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Argentine teenager Juan Martin Del Potro (pictured) stands on the verge of a place in the Top 100 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings following a 6-2, 6-2 second round victory over seventh-seeded Robby Ginepri at the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
Del Potro, who reached the Umag quarterfinals (l. to Wawrinka) in July and has won two ATP Challenger circuit title in Aguascalientes and Segovia this season, will next meet No. 10 seed Tim Henman.
Henman knocked out Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-2, 6-1 in his first visit to Tokyo since 1998. The 32-year-old Briton made his ATP debut as a qualifier at the tournament 12 years ago, falling in the third round to Pete Sampras.
ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer, already qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai in November, will play Serbian Victor Troicki in the second round on Wednesday. Troicki, a 20-year-old winner of one ATP Challenger circuit title in Dharwood this year, won his first ATP-level match over Spain’s Fernando Vicente 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2.
Second-seeded Tommy Robredo and No. 3 seed Mario Ancic, both in the Top 10 of the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race will also look to boost their chances of featuring in the season-ending finale when they open their campaigns on day three in Tokyo.
Robredo, currently No. 7 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, will face Yen-Hsun Lu, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Ramon Delgado. While Ancic, ranked No. 10 with 42 points less than Robredo, challenges Dane Kenneth Carlsen in the second round.
Germany's Lars Burgsmuller edged past Wayne Arthurs of Australia 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 7-6(3) for a second round meeting with fifth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen, winner of one ATP title in Auckland this season and ranked No. 17 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race.
Stefan Koubek, Alexander Waske, Danai Udomchoke, Rainer Schuettler and Satoshi Iwabuchi were also first round winners on day two at the Ariake Colosseum and Ariake Tennis Forest Park.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Henman: "I have fond memories of Tokyo because it is here in 1994 that I qualified for my first ATP main draw event, won two rounds and played against Sampras on the Centre Court. I wanted to play the Asian tour again last year but I had the back injury and I had to pull out."
Del Potro: "I served very well today and that took pressure off me. [Ginepri] gave me a couple of opportunities and I took them. I like to play on these courts, hard is my favorite surface."
On his next opponent: "I was playing against Henman on the PlayStation last year and now I meet him for real on a tennis court! I am looking forward to that."
Troicki: "I am really very excited. I am going to go out there and try to play my best tennis. I will try to stay calm and focused. I often watch him on TV and he's getting better and better!"

BTW, I always thought Del Potro liked clay the most. A lot of the big results I've heard from his camp were on clay. _________________
Federer claws his way to a win in two tiebreaks against a no-name qualifier, Robredo goes through 4 and 1, and Murray goes down 6-3 7-6 to Novak. _________________

Good win for Novak. I am surpised at the Federer result. Something must be illing him for him to have to go through 2 tiebreaks over the Qulaifer _________________

still, two tiebreaks? that's odd for not knowing him, I could understand a first set tiebreaker, but he should have got used to him by the second set and destroyed him. _________________
ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer improved his hard-court record this year to 46-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 13 seed and defending champion Wesley Moodie under a closed roof at the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Federer needed just 52 minutes to improve his 2006 match record to 74-5.
The Swiss will next play Japanese wild card Takao Suzuki, who saved five match points for a 6-7(4), 7-6(10), 6-1 win over Alexander Waske of Germany.
Should Federer beat Suzuki to reach the semifinals on Friday, he will break his INDESIT ATP Race record of 1,345 points that he set last year. The 25-year-old currently has 1,324 points.
Federer has won eight titles (ATP Masters Series Canada, ATP Masters Series Indian Wells, ATP Masters Series Miami, Australian Open, Doha, Halle, US Open, Wimbledon) from 12 finals this season.
The 25-year-old Swiss has compiled a 229-15 record, with 30 titles in 45 tournaments, since the beginning of the 2004 season.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Tommy Robredo, who is in contention to join Federer and Rafael Nadal at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai next month, will play No. 9 seed Hyung-Taik Lee in the quarterfinals.
Robredo stands just one point away from reclaiming the No. 6 spot in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race from James Blake, following a 6-4, 7-6(9) win over No. 15 seed Vince Spadea. Race to Masters Cup update
Lee stopped Dmitry Tursunov, who collected his maiden ATP title in a rain-delayed final in Mumbai on Monday. The Korean improved his match record for the season to 22-14 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win.
Heavy rain in Tokyo has forced third-seed Mario Ancic's third round match against Rainer Schuettler and No. 10 seed Tim Henman's clash against 18-year-old Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro to be postponed until Friday.
Benjamin Becker and Jiri Novak took the court for the last match of the Day 4 schedule and Becker emerged a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) winner at 3.24 a.m after having saved one match point while serving at 5-6 in the third set. It is the latest finish to a match in ATP history.
Previously, the latest time a match finished was at 3.21 a.m. In that match at Philadelphia in 1990, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier lost a doubles match 6-4, 6-2 to Paul Chamberlin and Tim Wilkison.
